Warning Signs That Your Home Needs Repairs

The most considerable fear for many homeowners is that something will happen to their home, and they won’t be able to stop it or see it coming.  Nobody wants to be caught off guard with an enormous repair or replacement emergency, and in some cases, missing the warning signs could leave you with a couple so flooded that everything has to be replaced.

Here are the top warning signs that your home needs repairs and what you can do about them.

Your Roof Gathers Ice In Winter

When we picture a beautiful winter wonderland, we picture cute little houses with snow on their roofs and yards.  Unfortunately, this perfect image can be symbolic of a large problem.  If snow or ice is gathering on your home’s top without melting, that means there’s something wrong with either your heating, your insulation, or your gutters.  Of course, snow will stick for a day or so after it falls, but any longer than that can be wrong.

You can correct this by ensuring your gutters are completely cleared out before the first freeze of the year, check your insulation to ensure it’s keeping your house hot enough, and ensure that your heating is sufficient.  Putting off getting any of these unchecked could leave you with either a caved roof or a flooded basement.

There Are Cracks All Over Your Sidewalk

Is your driveway or sidewalk riddled with cracks and considerable unevenness?  Do branches from nearby trees reach the siding of your home?  Both of these are problems that have to do with trees growing too close to your home.  If the roots get into your house’s foundation, that can cause irreparable damage.  Avoid this trouble by paying attention to how close the trees are to your home and what species they are.

If the trees are touching your home, they’re creating a superhighway for bugs, birds, and small mammals to vanish into the building.  Although these critters may be looking for Boston homes for sale within their budget, you don’t have to make your home their destination.  Cut away any branches that come too close.

Your Basement Feels Damp

The cliche basement is a dark and damp area where nobody wants to stay for too long.  Unfortunately, that dampness can be a symptom that your house is trying to use to warn you.  If your basement feels wet, you need to set up a dehumidifier and have the rooms checked for mold or rot.  It would help if you also took the time to ensure your gutters are aimed away from your home and basement and check your yard leveling.  The last thing you want is for a damp basement to become a flooded basement.

Lights Flicker Or Don’t Work.

If your closet light, your bathroom light, and your kitchen light all flicker for no reason, and you’ve switched out the bulbs, it’s time to have an electrician take a look at your home.  If animals get into your home, they may attempt to chew through any wiring they can get, or a home that is shoddily put together may have hazardous wiring that needs to be replaced.  Catch this sooner rather than later: since later may include a house fire.
